Combining the Galapagos Islands with Machu Picchu: When to go

A visit to South America often has either a wildlife cruise around the Galapagos Islands or a journey to the fabled lost city of Machu Picchu as the main objective.  However, for those of you fortunate to be able to combine a trip to both (what a wonderful idea!) the dilemma we are often asked is ‘When is the best time to go’?

The Galapagos Islands can be visited pretty much year-round whilst the finest weather for the central highlands of Peru where Machu Picchu is situated, is between June and September.  June is therefore probably the best time - there are fewer visitors to South America at this time than there are in July and August and prices are therefore lower than they are just a month later.  August should be avoided for the Galapagos as this is when many of the vessels are withdrawn for their annual maintenance during what is usually the quietest month for departures.

If you wish to look at incorporating the Galapagos Islands and Machu Picchu in a 'combination trip' then get in touch – we can tailor-make a trip to fit your requirements or suggest a ready-made escorted tour if you prefer to travel as part of a small group.
