The Trans-Bhutan Trail

After being effectively closed to the outside world for over two years, Bhutan has now officially re-opened its doors, which is wonderful news for everyone wishing to visit the ‘Land of the Thunder Dragon’.

Having an extended closure has allowed the Bhutanese authorities to consider what is most important to the country, and as a result they have decided to re-open with a much greater focus on sustainable tourism.

To that end the ‘Trans Bhutan Trail’ has been created –  a not-for-profit sustainable tourism initiative which aims to restore a unique piece of Bhutan’s cultural heritage for the benefit of its people, and which allows visitors to hike the length of Bhutan staying in more remote parts of the country that otherwise were little visited.

An 11-day hike along the Trans Bhutan Trail costs from £3795 per person

Indonesia awaits

With excellent weather between May and October, the vast archipelago of Indonesian islands offers an unrivalled breadth of choice of travel options in the spring, summer, and autumn months.

The main island of Java is the cultural heartland, where civilisations flourished from the early 8th century, and many early monuments from this period – such as the temples of Prambanan and Borobudur – remain in excellent condition. Java combines well with neighbouring Bali – Indonesia’s only Hindu island and one of the most beautiful – and we suggest you take time to search out the quieter corners such as Sidemen and Amed.

Indonesia also offers some unique wildlife experiences, including the Orangutans in Sumatra and Kalimantan, birdlife in West Bali National Park and the famous ‘dragons’ on the Komodo Islands. And if you’re looking for an idyllic island for your Robinson Crusoe fix you have thousands to choose from, with Kura Kura, Siladen and Seraya Kecil amongst the favourites.

14-day Java and Bali tours start from £1380 per person excluding flights

E-visas return for India

The recent return of e-visas, which were removed due to the pandemic, now makes it easier, cheaper, and more convenient to travel to India.

E-visas cost less than traditional visas, can be processed in as little as 72 hours (vs. several weeks for traditional visas), and can be applied for online.

To celebrate the return of e-visas, tour operators have responded with a range of holidays to India.

Exodus have a 17-day ‘Indian Tiger Safari’ which visits three of the best National Parks for nature in India: Pench, Kanha and Bandhavgarh. With fifteen game drives included in this trip, the chances of seeing the magnificent Bengal tiger from a safe distance are greatly increased.

Abercrombie & Kent offers a 14-night ‘Peacocks & Palaces’ itinerary with visits to Delhi and Mumbai, the Taj Mahal and Udaipur as well as an 11-day ‘Classic Southern India’ tour which takes in Kerala, wildlife-spotting in Periyar National Park and the Meenakshi Temple in Madura.

Cox & Kings focuses on Rajasthan in a 14-day ‘Passage through Rajasthan’ itinerary. Following the imperial sights of Mumbai (Bombay), travel through the heart of Rajasthan, exploring magnificent forts and ornate palaces, finishing at the Taj Mahal.  C& K also offer an 11-night Golden Triangle & Shimla tour visits imperial Delhi, the legendary Taj Mahal in Agra, princely Jaipur, and the scenic hill station of Shimla.
