With the UK Government indicating that international travel can resume on 17th May – subject to review – the recently published insights from a survey of 20,000 travellers by AITO, the Specialist Travel Association, suggests there will likely be a swift return to making overseas trips.

When questioned about their appetite for re-starting their travels, a resounding 89% of respondents said they would take the same or a higher number of holidays once travel was safe again.

When analysing by age, those aged 50 to 59 are showing the most desire to travel:  85% of those in their 50’s intend to travel soon compared with 80% of those in their 30’s. Encouragingly, the post-pandemic predictions that people over 70 would be permanently put off travel are not borne out by the data with 77% of people in the 70-79 bracket saying that they would travel again.

In a separate survey conducted by Holiday Extras, when asked what they were most looking forward to once lockdown ends, more people said they were looking forward to a holiday (43%) than anything else – that was significantly more than a hug (22%), dinner out (20%) or going to the cinema (12%).

With the success of the UK vaccination programme and popular destinations such as Greece, Portugal, Turkey, the Seychelles and the Maldives recently announcing their re-opening plans for incoming visitors, we are increasingly assured that overseas travel will shortly resume and steadily rebuild.

It has been a long haul but finally, within a couple of months we look forward to getting our clients airborne once again.
